Dear Volunteer,

Literacy Volunteers would like to thank you for your interest in volunteering your time as an adult reading tutor, tester, board member and/or helper.  We would be honored to have you join our volunteer program.

Last year in both counties we served over 130 adult learners-16,860 adults to go!

As a volunteer tutor, YOU, make a great commitment to your student (adult learner). To become a tutor you must complete an 18-hour tutor training workshop. As a tutor, you, agree to meet with your student a minimum of one hour per week. Real life time is usually 2 hours when planning the lesson and driving to the public meeting place. The tutor training sessions will demonstrate techniques to you on how to work with various adult learners. Discussions will focus on why you use these various techniques for word recognition, comprehension and the use of the language experience model. Our students are 18 years and older and will be reading between a zero level (non-reader) to the fifth grade level. Please take a few minutes and read our materials, so that you can decide what best meets your volunteer needs.

Thank you for your interest and feel free to contact me at 304-296-3400 or shuggins@wvwise.org if you should have questions or suggestions.

Sincerely,

Susie A. Huggins, MA
