MISSION STATEMENT
Our mission is to reduce the number
of adults who can not read well enough to possess basic literacy skills
in Monongalia County. Literacy Volunteers' volunteer tutors assist these
adult learners to help them improve their reading and writing skills at
no charge (FREE) to the adult learner. Literacy Volunteers strictly upholds
the confidentiality of all adult learners in the program. The organization
also seeks to raise public awareness of the problems associated with adult
illiteracy.
Reading is a difficult task for
40 million adults in the US. From the 1990 Census, 202,162 West Virginians
have less than a 9th grade education. Monongalia County has 4,636 of those
who have less than a 9th grade education 20% of the population Preston
County has 6,974 of those who have less than a 9th grade education 37%
of the population Over 1 in 4 people in Preston County did not graduate
high school! Literacy Volunteers of Monongalia and Preston Counties, United
Way agencies, offers FREE one-to-one tutoring that is strictly confidential.
LVA of MC is a non-profit organization, which has existed since 1983. Their
mission is to assist adults who do not read or who do not read well enough
to improve their reading and writing skills. Literacy Volunteers works
to raise public awareness about the problems associated with adult illiteracy.
The ability to read & write is basic to living a full life. Adult literacy
students gain independence as they are able to become full participants
at home, in the workplace and in society as informed contributing citizens.
